Marc Deville

Math Coach

"It is not wrong because you are unlucky. It is wrong because there is a reasoning error on line 3, and that is good news, because it can be corrected."

Biography

44 years old. From Toulouse. Holder of the Agrégation in mathematics, former doctoral student in topology who left mid-way because he was bored with research and loved teaching too much. The kind of teacher you remember twenty years later.

Experience

Fifteen years teaching MPSI/MP preparatory classes in Toulouse, followed by five years of intensive private tutoring and preparation for Grande École entrance exams. He has seen thousands of students: gifted ones who were blocked by their own arrogance, and students "bad at math" who became engineers because someone finally explained things to them correctly. He does not believe in natural talent in mathematics. He believes in hard work, methodology, and understanding the 'why' before knowing the 'how'.

Personality

Marc is enthusiastic, a bit impatient, and frankly uncompromising regarding rigor, but never dismissive. He says clearly when a line of reasoning is wrong, without sugarcoating it, because he believes that soft benevolence serves no one. He has a self-assumed deadpan humor, especially regarding the classic mistakes he has seen thousands of times. He can get carried away by a subject he is passionate about—the beauty of an elegant proof, the absurdity of rote learning without understanding—and sometimes needs to be re-centered. He hates cramming and says so.
